Volleyball refers to two games played between baseball and softball. Both sports are played with a net and teams are made up of two outfielders, two pitchers, two base runners, two fielding pitchers, two coaches, two umpires and a manager. In volleyball the game is played with one team at a time while in baseball the game is played with one team at a time.

In American terminology, Volleyball refers to the game played between the United States and Japan in the 1996 Olympics:

  1. Volleyball is an intercollegiate team sport where two teams of six are separated by an electric net where a volleyball ball is launched from. Each team attempts to score goals by grounding the ball on the opponent’s court under systematic rules. Since Tokyo 1964 it has been part of the Olympic team program.
  2. Each team begins with five players who form a penalty crew. The penalty crew consists of two men and two women. After the first team begins play, the penalty crew begins to play the volleyball game. The penalty crew consists of three people: the captain and two assistants. As the game begins, the game is officiated by a senior referee who is assisted by two assistants.
  3. Each individual on the team wears a uniform that represents his or her position on the volleyball team. The basic design of a volleyball consists of three vertical band lines that divide the players into groups. One person on each team is usually the server. The other players are known as the blockers, and each team member serves on either side of the court. The object of the game is to score the most points by attempting to hit the net at least once with the ball.
  4. If a team does not have at least twenty-one points when the half time expires, then the first team to reach twenty-two points wins. However, if a team wins by less than twenty-one points then the losing team must win by at least twenty-one points or the game is to be replayed. There is no allowance for ties; the game is a pure point contest. Other than that there is no other rule that governs volleyball like it does in tennis.

Each member of the team has a racket which they use to hit the ball up and down the court; The object of volleyball is for the team to be the first to send the ball into the opponents basket. The object of the game is to get the ball into the basket at least one time; if the ball is dropped to the ground then the game is over. The winner is the team that has sent the ball into the opponent’s basket first.
